Publishers in the United Kingdom can now choose to exclude their content from Google's AI-generated search summaries, following a decision by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The regulator confirmed the opt-out mechanism is designed to give news organisations and other content creators greater leverage when negotiating commercial deals with the tech giant.

The CMA stated that the new arrangement would place publishers "in a stronger position to negotiate content deals with Google," acknowledging longstanding concerns from media companies that their articles and pages were being used to train and power AI features without adequate compensation or consent.

The move reflects growing regulatory pressure across Europe and beyond to address how artificial intelligence systems consume and summarise web content. Publishers have increasingly argued that AI-powered search tools reduce direct traffic to their websites, cutting into advertising revenues while Google benefits from the content they produce.

Google's AI Overview feature, which displays AI-generated summaries at the top of search results pages, has been a particular flashpoint. Critics argue it discourages users from clicking through to original sources, effectively shortchanging the publishers whose journalism and content underpin the summaries.

The CMA's intervention marks a notable step in the UK's broader effort to regulate the relationship between large technology platforms and content creators.
