Traffic accident in Saarde parish turns into insurance fraud criminal case

In February 2023, a traffic accident occurred in Saarde parish when a red Lexus IS collided with a blue Volkswagen Touran. Initially it appeared to be a routine insurance claim, but expert examination revealed inconsistencies in the accident that led to the initiation of a criminal case.

In February 2023 at 20:20, a red Lexus IS was driving from Rae lake towards the Tõitoja–Häädemeeste road in Saarde parish. At an intersection, the vehicle collided with a blue Volkswagen Touran – the Lexus was pushed into a ditch, the Volkswagen came to rest in the middle of the road. Both drivers emerged from the accident unharmed and the incident appeared to be a routine insurance claim.

However, over time signs emerged suggesting that the actual circumstances of the accident might not match the initial description. During the expert examination, significant inconsistencies came to light that cast doubt on the circumstances of the collision and prompted investigators to examine the case more closely.

The inconsistencies ultimately led to the initiation of a criminal case on suspicion of insurance fraud. This type of crime, where staged or distorted traffic accidents are used to obtain insurance compensation, is a prevalent problem in Estonia that insurance companies and law enforcement authorities actively address.
