Tartu northern bypass and Tiksoja bridge left out of road development plan

Despite promises made last autumn, the Tartu northern bypass road and the Tiksoja bridge have not been included in the newly approved road maintenance and development plan. The reason given is a lack of funding.

Two major road infrastructure projects in the Tartu region — the northern bypass road and the Tiksoja bridge — have been left out of Estonia's officially approved road maintenance and development plan for the coming period, despite earlier assurances that they would be included.

Last autumn, transport authorities indicated that both the Tartu northern bypass and the Tiksoja bridge construction would feature in the updated road plan. However, when the final version of the plan was approved at the start of this year, neither project made the cut. Officials cite insufficient funding as the primary reason for their exclusion.

The absence of these projects from the plan is likely to disappoint residents and local authorities in the Tartu area, who have long advocated for improved road connections around Estonia's second-largest city. The northern bypass in particular has been seen as a key solution to easing traffic congestion around Tartu.
