Tartu County Court today convicted Risto Buhvestov of orchestrating a large-scale loan fraud scheme in which he and his associates obtained nearly 300,000 from lending companies using other people's identities. The verdict was delivered despite the defendant's absence — Buhvestov had been summoned to the courtroom but chose not to attend.

The court determined that Buhvestov, working together with accomplices, systematically applied for loans in the names of unsuspecting individuals at various loan companies. The total sum fraudulently obtained through the scheme amounted to close to 300,000 euros.

Despite the considerable financial damage caused, the Tartu court opted for a suspended custodial sentence rather than immediate imprisonment. The decision has raised questions about the proportionality of the punishment given the scale and premeditated nature of the fraud.
