A resident in Tapa recently fell victim to scammers, losing several thousand euros. The criminals convinced the victim that keeping cash at home is illegal, and in this way obtained the money.

This is a classic telephone scam scheme in which criminals impersonate officials and pressure people into making quick decisions. The victim did not have time to consider the situation calmly or seek help before the money had already been handed over.

Police remind the public that no official — not the police, banks, or any other institution — ever demands that people hand over cash kept at home. If someone calls and gives such instructions, the call should be ended immediately and the police notified on 112.
