A Swedish government commission has proposed restricting access to social media platforms for children under 15. The proposal is part of a broader debate on children's digital safety across Europe.

A Swedish government commission announced on Tuesday a proposal to ban access to social media platforms for children under 15. Sweden is among the first European countries to consider legally establishing such an age restriction.

The proposal reflects growing concern about children's mental health and internet safety. Several studies in recent years have pointed to a connection between social media use and psychological problems among young people, prompting governments worldwide to seek solutions.

Sweden's move mirrors Australia's decision, where parliament passed legislation in 2024 banning social media use for those under 16. Other countries, including the UK, have also discussed similar measures. In Estonia, child digital safety is likewise a current topic, but the government has not officially considered implementing such restrictions so far.
