Study: 73% of gas appliances sold in Europe fail to meet requirements

An EU-funded study has uncovered troubling findings: as many as 73% of inspected gas appliances, including gas grills, camping stoves, and gas cookers, fail to meet EU safety requirements. This means that the majority of inspected products do not comply with the safety and documentation requirements mandated by law.

During the study, deficiencies were found in both product documentation and actual operational safety. The latter is particularly concerning, as non-compliant gas appliances can cause serious accidents, including gas leaks, explosions, or poisoning. Consumers using such products may unknowingly be at risk.

EU consumer product safety regulations require that all gas appliances placed on the market undergo rigorous safety inspections. However, the study results suggest that market surveillance of products sold to consumers is inadequate, and non-compliant products are still reaching consumers. According to experts, market surveillance requires substantial strengthening.

When purchasing gas appliances, consumers are advised to pay attention to the CE marking and other safety certificates, and to prefer recognized brands. If an appliance behaves suspiciously, it should be immediately taken out of service and a qualified professional should be consulted.
