Solar panel waste is creating an unexpected problem in Estonia

Waste managers demand changes

Waste management companies have raised the question of the need to relax current regulations. Existing rules were not designed to handle the volume of solar panel waste now appearing on the market. The panels contain various materials, including heavy metals, which require careful handling and do not fit into ordinary household waste streams.

Environment Agency proposes sea containers

The Estonian Environment Agency has offered a novel solution to the problem: in the future, decommissioned solar panels could be stored in sea containers. This approach would allow waste to be safely stored until appropriate processing capacity is developed. Specialists emphasise that the sector must rapidly establish clear regulations, since the volume of decommissioned panels will grow significantly in the coming years.
