Many people search for solutions to sleep problems in pharmacy aisles, but sleep expert Yoshi Kurihara believes the answer may actually lie in the fruit and vegetable section of an ordinary supermarket. Kurihara explained to the Express that certain fruits contain natural compounds that help regulate the body's sleep-wake cycle and support the natural production of hormones such as melatonin.

According to the expert, people often underestimate the role of nutrition in the quality of nighttime rest. In fact, proper diet can extend sleep by up to an hour without the need for artificial supplements. Kurihara highlights two fruits that deserve special attention for those dealing with sleep problems.

The first recommendation is kiwi, which is rich in antioxidants and serotonin — a substance that plays an important role in regulating sleep. Studies have shown that two kiwis before bed can significantly improve sleep duration and quality. The second expert favourite is sour cherry, or Montmorency cherries, which contain natural melatonin and are linked to longer and deeper sleep.

Kurihara emphasizes that the advantage of a natural approach is that fruits support the body's own hormone production and do not create dependency or side effects that can occur with artificial sleep aids. His recommendation is to add these fruits to your evening meal or eat them as a light snack a few hours before bedtime.
