Security expert Rainer Saks: No signs Russia is preparing to attack Baltic states
Estonian security expert and former foreign intelligence chief Rainer Saks says there are no indicators that Russia is preparing to expand military operations toward the Baltic states. He also criticized Western media for often amplifying Russian messaging without sufficient scrutiny.
PoliitikaEstonian security expert and former head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Rainer Saks, has assessed that despite alarming reports circulating in Western media, there are currently no concrete signs that Russia is preparing to broaden its military activities to include the Baltic region.
Saks acknowledged that Western outlets have been running stories suggesting Russia could be gearing up for an attack on the Baltic states in the near future. However, he stressed that such assessments are not supported by observable evidence on the ground or in intelligence circles.
Western Media Under Scrutiny
A key concern raised by Saks was the tendency of Western media to reproduce Russian narratives with relatively little critical analysis. He argued that when outlets fail to interrogate Kremlin messaging, they risk amplifying disinformation rather than informing the public.
Saks's remarks come at a time of heightened anxiety in the region, with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania all closely monitoring Russian military movements since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. NATO has significantly reinforced its eastern flank in response, including bolstering troop presence in the Baltic states.
Context of Baltic Threat Perceptions
While official threat assessments from Estonian defence and intelligence institutions have consistently flagged Russia as a long-term security risk, experts like Saks emphasize the importance of distinguishing between structural risks and imminent threats. Overstating the immediacy of an attack, he implies, can be just as damaging to public discourse as underestimating it.
