Ukraine's Defence Ministry Intelligence (DIU) disclosed on Thursday that Russia is implementing a systematic strategy within UN institutions to expand its propaganda network across African countries. According to the DIU, this represents a well-coordinated information warfare campaign that leverages international platforms to disseminate Moscow's narratives.

Over the years, Russia has built a formidable network of influence across the African continent, utilising both diplomatic channels and media outlets. Through various UN subsidiary bodies and forums, Moscow is able to give its messaging the appearance of international legitimacy, which renders propaganda content more credible in the eyes of local audiences.

According to Ukraine's intelligence service, this activity is particularly concerning as it undermines the UN's credibility as an impartial international organisation. Experts have repeatedly highlighted that Russia exploits international organisations to spread anti-Western narratives in countries where African public opinion is still taking shape.

Influencing African nations has become a central element of Russia's foreign policy since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Through this, Moscow seeks to break through international isolation and secure support in UN votes, where African countries' votes carry significant weight.
