The Riigikogu's National Defence Committee amended the draft of Estonia's security policy framework document, requiring the prime minister to provide parliament with an overview of the country's security policy once a year. This change affects the updated security policy framework document.
PoliitikaThe Riigikogu's National Defence Committee today decided to amend the draft of Estonia's updated security policy framework document, adding a requirement that the prime minister presents parliament with an overview of the country's security policy once a year. Previously, such regular reporting obligations of this scope were not envisaged.
The purpose of the amendment is to ensure that Riigikogu members are kept informed of the security situation and policy directions on a regular and structured basis. This gives parliament better opportunities to exercise oversight on security matters and, if necessary, to discuss the government's actions.
Estonia's security policy framework document is a strategic document that defines the country's foreign policy and defence policy priorities. The document is updated regularly to reflect the changing security environment, including Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
