PoliitikaTuesday, 26 May, marks the 1,553rd day of Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine, as new developments continue to shape the security landscape across the region.
According to Reuters, NATO is reinforcing the forces specifically designated for the defence of the Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The move signals a continued commitment by the alliance to bolster its eastern flank amid ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.
The Baltic region has been among the most vocal in calling for increased NATO presence and preparedness since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. All three Baltic states share land or sea borders with Russia or its close ally Belarus, making the security question particularly acute.
NATO has progressively expanded its forward presence in the region over the past three years, including multinational battlegroups and enhanced air policing missions. The latest reinforcement announcement is expected to add further military capacity to these existing measures.
