MSF warns: Ebola spread in DR Congo is 'alarmingly rapid'
International aid organisation Médecins Sans Frontières warns that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is unprecedented – never before have so many cases been recorded in such a short time after an outbreak was announced. The WHO Director-General visited the hardest-hit regions.
PoliitikaThe international humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), or Doctors Without Borders, warns that the Ebola outbreak spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is alarmingly rapid and the disease has never spread at this pace before. According to the organisation, no previous Ebola-related outbreak has recorded so many infection cases in such a short time since the outbreak was announced.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General visited the particularly hard-hit regions to assess the situation firsthand and support local health workers in combating the crisis. According to experts, the situation is extremely complex due to terrain, population movement, and lack of resources.
Unprecedented outbreak
MSF emphasised that the current Ebola outbreak is distinguished from all previous ones by its extraordinarily rapid spread. The organisation calls on the international community to respond faster and allocate more resources to assist the crisis-affected region. The DRC has previously experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks, but the current situation appears to be particularly alarming both in terms of transmission speed and geographical extent.
Ebola is a severe and often fatal viral disease that spreads through the blood and body fluids of infected people and animals. Symptoms of the disease include high fever, severe weakness, muscle and headache, and bleeding. The international community is watching the situation in the DRC with grave concern, as the rapid spread of the disease could pose a threat to neighbouring countries.
