Katariina Libe: streaming platform audiences demand tension from series
Katariina Libe, a writer and screenwriter who won the Estonian Screenwriters' Guild's inaugural screenwriting competition in the series category, believes that streaming platform audiences primarily expect compelling stories and tension from series. Linear television viewers, by contrast, prefer good feelings and pleasant entertainment.
KultuurEstonian writer and screenwriter Katariina Libe, who won the Estonian Screenwriters' Guild's first screenwriting competition in the series category, has made observations about two different forms of television consumption. According to her, the expectations that streaming platform and linear television audiences have for series are markedly different.
In Libe's view, users of Netflix, HBO and other streaming platforms look for compelling stories and tension in series — something that would keep them glued to the screen and make them want to watch the next episode immediately. Traditional television viewers, on the other hand, value the good feelings and warmth that a programme offers.
The Estonian Screenwriters' Guild screenwriting competition took place for the first time, marking an important step in recognising the creative community behind Estonian film and television productions. The competition win brought Libe to prominence among screenwriters, and her perspective on television consumption trends is therefore particularly noteworthy.
This distinction reflects a broader global trend in which streaming platforms have changed the way people consume series — viewing often involves watching several episodes in succession, which requires screenwriters to have the skill to maintain tension and engagement throughout the season.
