Jõgeva District Court on Tuesday handed down a judgment in one of Estonia's most shocking crimes committed by minors — three youths were found guilty of the brutal murder of a 49-year-old wheelchair-bound man, which took place in spring of last year.

The court sentenced two girls to nearly ten years' imprisonment. A third young man, who recorded the crime on his phone, received an eight-year sentence. The sentences are extraordinarily severe in the history of juvenile crime in Estonia.

The prosecutor expressed concern after the court ruling that the minors may not fully comprehend the gravity of their actions. "I am not certain that the length of their sentences will truly sink in with them," said the prosecutor, alluding to the youths' age and their capacity to understand such consequences.

The case has sparked widespread public debate about juvenile crime and the causes of violent behaviour among young people. In experts' view, the case raises questions about the education system, the role of the family, and the principles of juvenile punishment in Estonia.
