Jaspar Vaher leads Sweden ERC rally until costly error ends title hopes
Estonian rally driver Jaspar Vaher held the lead at the European Rally Championship round in Sweden until a driving mistake on Sunday morning dashed his chances at the biggest win of his career. Fellow Estonian Joosep Ralf Nõgene finished eighth, one of the best results of his career.
SportEstonian rally driver Jaspar Vaher was on course for the greatest victory of his career at the second round of the European Rally Championship season in Sweden, leading the event until Sunday morning before a small driving error cost him dearly.
Vaher had dominated much of the Swedish round, keeping a firm grip on first place through the gruelling stages. However, a momentary lapse proved decisive, ultimately denying him what would have been a landmark result in his rallying career.
«If there is no consistency, then speed alone is of little use,» Vaher reflected after the event, underlining the cruel nature of rally competition where a single mistake can undo hours of flawless driving.
Meanwhile, compatriot Joosep Ralf Nõgene delivered a strong performance of his own, crossing the finish line in eighth place — a result described as one of the best of his career and a positive sign for Estonian rally sport on the European stage.
The ERC season continues, and despite the disappointment in Sweden, Vaher's pace has demonstrated that he is a genuine contender at European level. Estonian fans will be hoping his consistency catches up with his undeniable speed in the rounds ahead.
