Iran Refuses to Negotiate Nuclear Programme After Trump Overture
Iran's foreign ministry stated on Friday categorically that the country's nuclear programme is not subject to negotiation. This came in response to suggestions that US President Donald Trump hopes to convince Iran to abandon enriched uranium as part of a Middle East peace agreement.
PoliitikaIran stated on Friday that it does not intend to hold negotiations on its nuclear programme, rejecting US President Donald Trump's intention to link it to the Middle East peace process. According to Iran's foreign ministry, the nuclear issue is non-negotiable for the country.
The background to this is Trump's suggestions that Washington hopes to persuade Tehran to renounce enriched uranium in return for an agreement to end regional conflict. Iranian officials resolutely rejected such a solution, emphasising that the nuclear programme is a matter of national sovereignty.
Tensions between Iran and the US over the nuclear issue have persisted for years. In 2015, an international nuclear agreement was concluded, but Trump withdrew from it during his first presidency in 2018, reimposing strict economic sanctions. Since then, Iran has gradually increased the volume and level of its uranium enrichment.
