For Ogier, Solberg's Japan Rally lesson: find stability alongside speed
Toyota dominated the Japan World Rally Championship event, but their driver Oliver Solberg had the toughest weekend, sliding off the road on Saturday. World champion Sébastien Ogier sent a clear message to his young teammate: speed alone is not enough; consistency is essential.
SportAt the Japan World Rally Championship event, Toyota displayed strong dominance, but of their five drivers, Oliver Solberg had the hardest time, having been on course for a podium finish on Saturday before sliding off the road. The result left the young Norwegian without a significant points haul.
World champion Sébastien Ogier finished the rally second, behind only teammate Elfyn Evans. The Frenchman had already been critical of Solberg's driving during the rally itself, and after the finish he reiterated his position clearly.
Ogier made it clear that alongside his natural speed, Solberg needs to develop stability and consistency. The young driver is certainly fast, but over the course of a longer rally he must be able to maintain concentration and avoid mistakes that undo an entire weekend's work.
Toyota's overall result in Japan was nonetheless strong – the team secured multiple top finishes and confirmed its position in the WRC manufacturers' championship. Solberg's retirement was a painful reminder that in rallying, speed is worthless without making it to the finish.
