Expert warns: SPF moisturizer does not replace sunscreen
Many people believe that makeup or moisturizer containing SPF provides sufficient protection against sun damage. General practitioner and aesthetic medicine doctor Dr Kasim Usman explains why relying on multi-purpose products can be risky. Proper sun protection requires using dedicated sunscreen products.
KultuurToday, SPF protection is found in virtually every type of skincare and makeup product – from moisturizers to foundations. This has led many people to believe that using an SPF product throughout the day means their skin is fully protected from sun damage. The reality, however, is considerably more complex.
General practitioner and aesthetic medicine doctor Dr Kasim Usman emphasizes that a multi-purpose product can never fully replace proper sunscreen. The core of the problem lies in the fact that the SPF contained in moisturizers and foundations is often too low, and people do not apply the product in sufficient quantities to achieve the stated protection factor.
Why is SPF in makeup not enough?
Sunscreen should be applied to the skin regardless of other products – it is the first line of defense. The SPF found in conventional foundation is an addition, not primary protection. Additionally, sunscreen must be reapplied every couple of hours, especially when spending extended time in the sun – applying foundation so frequently is neither practical nor feasible.
The expert recommends following a simple rule: apply a proper sunscreen product first, and then apply makeup products on top. In this way, all products serve their primary purpose – the SPF-enriched moisturizer hydrates and provides coverage, while the dedicated sunscreen protects against harmful UV rays. If you want to protect your skin effectively, you should not fall into the trap of relying solely on multi-purpose products out of convenience.
