Estonia's new gymnasium admission system still plagued by uncertainty
Despite a new June 9 deadline for gymnasiums and vocational schools to publish their lists of accepted students, school leaders warn that confusion and long waiting periods may persist this year. The Ministry of Education believes the process will improve next year with the introduction of the SAIS-3 information system.
EestiEstonia's Ministry of Education and Research has set a new deadline of June 9 for gymnasiums and vocational schools to publish their lists of accepted applicants — but school principals are skeptical the change will make much difference this year.
School leaders warn that the same problems seen last year are likely to resurface: students and families left in the dark about whether they have secured a place, and lengthy waiting periods that make planning the next school year difficult. The uncertainty is particularly stressful for ninth-grade graduates who must decide between upper secondary education and vocational training.
SAIS-3 to the rescue — next year
The Ministry of Education acknowledges the shortcomings but says a real fix is still a year away. According to the ministry, the school admissions process will become significantly smoother once the new information system SAIS-3 is rolled out next year. The updated platform is intended to centralise and streamline how school places are allocated across Estonia.
Until then, both schools and families will have to navigate the current system's limitations. Critics point out that publishing admission lists by June 9 is an improvement on paper, but without a coordinated system to manage offers and withdrawals in real time, the bottlenecks that caused last year's chaos are far from resolved.
Familiar frustrations expected
The concern among principals is that students who receive multiple offers will hold onto spots while others wait, creating a cascade effect that leaves many families without clarity well into the summer. This dynamic — common under the existing framework — is precisely what SAIS-3 is designed to eliminate, but its arrival comes too late to help the class of 2025.
