Estonian translation of Hunter S. Thompson's 'The Rum Diary' now available
Estonian publisher Tänapäev has released a translation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel 'The Rum Diary' as part of its Bibliotheca Potatoris series. The translation was done by Peeter Sauter. Thompson began writing the novel in the late 1950s, but it wasn't published until 1998.

Thompson, widely regarded as the pioneer of gonzo journalism, began writing the novel in the late 1950s. Despite being one of his early works, it remained unpublished for decades and only reached readers in 1998 — nearly forty years after it was first drafted.
The Estonian edition marks a new opportunity for local readers to explore Thompson's literary roots, before he rose to global fame with works like *Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas*. Translator Peeter Sauter is a well-known Estonian author and translator with a long track record of bringing international literature into Estonian.
