Viru County Court in Estonia has convicted Aleksei Toom of breaching international economic sanctions by covertly advancing the business interests of Russian state media conglomerate Rossiya Segodnya (known in Russian as Venemaa Täna) after sanctions had been imposed against the organisation.

The case centred on Toom's continued activities on behalf of the sanctioned Russian media group, which is one of Russia's largest state-controlled media conglomerates and operates outlets including RIA Novosti and Sputnik. International sanctions prohibiting business dealings with Rossiya Segodnya were introduced following Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine.

Estonian authorities determined that Toom knowingly continued to serve the economic interests of the Russian media giant despite being fully aware of the sanctions regime in place. The verdict underscores Estonia's firm stance on enforcing compliance with international sanctions targeting Russian entities.

The prosecution of individuals who circumvent or violate sanctions is a key part of Estonia's broader effort to uphold the international rules-based order and limit financial flows to sanctioned Russian organisations. Rossiya Segodnya has been subject to EU sanctions as part of measures targeting Russia's disinformation apparatus and state-controlled media infrastructure.
