Estonian app gets new feature: digital identity document can be shown to police

From 1 June, Estonian residents can present police with digital identity documents stored in the Estonian app in addition to physical documents. The update makes everyday life more convenient, as there is no longer a need to always carry a physical document with you.

From 1 June 2025, identity can be verified in Estonia through the Estonian app. This means that police officers no longer need to see a physical identity document – it is sufficient to present the document data found in the app.

The change significantly simplifies everyday life for those accustomed to carrying a smartphone but who sometimes forget their wallet or document folder at home. The Estonian app is a state mobile application that brings together various public sector services and already has a large user base.

The update is part of Estonia's broader efforts to develop a digital state and make public services more user-friendly. Estonia is internationally known for its e-government solutions, and the adoption of digital documents in everyday police checks is a logical step in this direction.
