Editorial: Gas safety requires regular inspection and maintenance
Gas accident statistics have remained concerning over the years. Gas appliances require regular inspection and maintenance to prevent serious incidents. Unfortunately, similar accidents recur year after year.
ArvamusGas accidents are, regrettably, not a rare occurrence in Estonia — every year, serious incidents happen due to negligence or lack of maintenance, accidents that could have been prevented. Gas appliances, whether intended for heating or food preparation, require regular inspection and proper maintenance.
The problem often lies in the fact that people do not consider regular gas appliance inspections necessary until something happens. Any combination of adverse circumstances — corroded piping, poorly ventilated rooms, unmaintained appliances — can lead to tragic consequences. Statistics have unfortunately been a continuous sad record over the years.
Prevention is the key word here. Specialists recommend having gas appliances inspected at least once a year, regularly checking the tightness of gas pipelines, and ensuring adequate ventilation in rooms. It is also advisable to keep a working carbon monoxide detector in the home, which can warn of this invisible and odourless danger early on.
Gas safety is everyone's responsibility. Both landlords and housing associations must ensure that gas appliances used in buildings comply with requirements and are regularly maintained. Taking it lightly can cost lives — both your own and those of your neighbours.
