Cardiologist professor Margus Viigimaa of North Estonia Medical Centre spoke at a conference in Parliament on May 3 titled "How to Reduce Tobacco-Related Health Damage?", where he explained the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and the role of smoking in their development.

According to Viigimaa, quitting smoking is one of the most effective steps a person can take to prevent heart disease. The cardiologist stressed that the health benefits are noticeable within a short time after stopping smoking — blood vessels begin to recover and the risk of a heart attack drops significantly.

The conference was held in Parliament and brought together medical specialists and politicians to discuss how to reduce health damage from tobacco consumption in Estonia. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in Estonia, and tobacco consumption significantly increases the risk of these conditions.
