The commander of the British Armed Forces, General Sir Richard Knighton, warned in an interview with the BBC that the UK is currently experiencing the most dangerous security period he has faced during his career. In Knighton's assessment, the situation is more concerning than ever before.

The General highlighted that Russia's increasingly bold activity in British airspace represents a serious threat to national security. He stated that Russian incursions risk crossing a critical line, which could have serious consequences. Knighton emphasised that such provocations are not random, but part of a larger pattern.

Growing Russian Threat

The British Ministry of Defence has recorded multiple incidents in recent years in which Russian military aircraft have approached UK airspace without permission. Additionally, Russian activity has been observed near British submarine cables and other critical infrastructure.

Knighton's warning comes at a time when NATO allies are increasingly concerned about Russian military aggression across Europe following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The UK is one of Ukraine's principal supporters and has provided Kyiv with substantial military aid.

Strengthening British Defence Capability

General Knighton emphasised the need to increase British defence spending and strengthen the nation's military readiness. He stated this is essential to ensure UK security against growing threats. The British government has already announced plans to raise defence spending in the coming years to address the changed security environment.
