British court: UK not required to pay compensation to Rwanda for ending asylum agreement

A British court has ruled that the UK is not obligated to pay compensation to Rwanda following the collapse of an asylum agreement between the two countries. The agreement was designed to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, but the pact was terminated unilaterally by the UK government.

A British court has ruled that the UK is not obligated to pay compensation to Rwanda in connection with the termination of an asylum agreement between the two countries. Under the agreement, the UK would have sent asylum seekers to Rwanda, but the pact collapsed after the UK government decided to withdraw from it.

The Rwanda asylum agreement was one of the previous Conservative government's flagship measures to reduce migration, but it faced considerable opposition from the outset in both courts and human rights organisations. The UK Supreme Court had previously found that Rwanda is not a safe destination country for asylum seekers, which cast doubt on the viability of the entire scheme.

Following the Labour government's election in 2024, the Rwanda agreement was finally terminated. The court's latest ruling confirms that such action does not incur financial obligations to Rwanda, meaning the UK avoids potentially substantial compensation payments.
