Architect Raine Karp: 300 buildings designed, but only two homes
At 86 years old, architect Raine Karp is one of Estonia's most prolific architectural figures, with nearly 300 buildings to his credit. Yet paradoxically, he has lived in only two places throughout his life – his childhood home in Pelgulinnas and his own-designed house in Merivälja, where he has spent over half a century.
KultuurEstonian architecture legend Raine Karp is celebrating his 86th birthday this year, carrying behind him a rich creative legacy – nearly 300 designed buildings. Paradoxically, the man himself has lived in only two places his entire life.
Karp's first home was in Pelgulinnas, Tallinn, where he spent his childhood and youth with his parents. From there he moved to Merivälja, to a house he designed and built together with his father, which he has called home for over fifty years.
Behind his decision to study architecture lay both a childhood hobby and a stroke of luck – two circumstances that set the young man on the path of architectural design and ultimately shaped one of the most remarkable careers in Estonian architecture's history.
Raine Karp is known above all for his large and prestigious buildings, which have shaped the appearance of Tallinn and other Estonian cities over decades. His work is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and the ability to harmonize contemporary architecture with its surrounding environment.
