Amnesty: Over 1,000 people arrested in Persian Gulf states for social media posts

Amnesty International accuses Persian Gulf states of suppressing freedom of speech, using the conflict between Iran, the US and Israel as a pretext. According to the organisation, over 1,000 people have been arrested for posting about the war and conflict on social media. Amnesty assesses that the states are using the conflict situation to force people into silence.

International human rights organisation Amnesty International has levelled serious accusations against states in the Persian Gulf region, claiming they have used the military conflict between Iran, the US and Israel as a pretext to severely restrict freedom of speech. According to the organisation, over 1,000 people have been arrested for posting about war and conflict on social media.

According to Amnesty International, Persian Gulf states systematically suppress any public opinion that does not align with official positions on the conflict. Those arrested include both ordinary citizens and activists who have shared news, comments or expressed views on social media.

The organisation emphasises that such actions flagrantly violate international human rights standards and that conflict situations should not be used as justification for limiting citizens' fundamental rights. Amnesty International demands the release of all those arrested and calls for an end to the suppression of freedom of speech in the region.
