Literary historian Aivar Kull has turned to artificial intelligence to shed new light on one of Estonian literature's intriguing puzzles — the possible translated origins of four poems attributed to Heiti Talvik, one of Estonia's most celebrated interwar poets.

In his latest instalment of the history lesson series, Kull engaged in a dialogue with an AI tool to analyse the poems and trace their possible source texts. The findings suggest that at least some of the works long considered original compositions may in fact have translated origins, a revelation that could prompt scholars to reassess Talvik's place in the Estonian literary canon.

Heiti Talvik (1903–1947) is widely regarded as a defining voice of Estonian poetry, known for his dark, expressionist style and themes of existential despair. Any suggestion that some of his poems derived from foreign-language sources rather than being wholly original works inevitably sparks debate among literary historians and enthusiasts alike.

Kull's use of AI in literary historical research reflects a growing trend of applying modern technology to humanistic scholarship. By cross-referencing textual patterns, stylistic features, and known translation practices of the era, the AI was able to flag potential source materials that human researchers had previously overlooked or not connected to Talvik's output.

The discussion opens broader questions about authorship, translation, and literary originality in early twentieth-century Estonian literature — a period when many writers actively engaged with European literary currents, sometimes adapting foreign works into the Estonian context. Kull's findings are expected to generate further scholarly discussion and may prompt a re-examination of archival sources.
