Pärnu court fines Belarusian smuggler 1.7M for trafficking 9 million cigarettes

The case centred on the illegal trafficking of approximately 9 million cigarettes, representing one of the more significant tobacco smuggling prosecutions to come before Estonian courts in recent years.

Tobacco smuggling from Belarus and Russia remains a persistent challenge for Estonian and broader EU border authorities, with contraband cigarettes typically sold far below market price, depriving governments of tax revenue and undercutting legitimate retailers.

The Pärnu court's verdict sends a strong signal that Estonian authorities are prepared to pursue substantial financial penalties against those caught running large-scale smuggling operations across the country's borders.
